Management comment

The macroeconomic environment improved in July as fears of a double dip recession abated and a strong start to the quarterly reporting season revived investor confidence. Despite a bout of weakness around the middle of the month triggered by disappointing US economic data and signs of a slowdown in China, markets ended the month significantly higher. Financial stocks soared in Europe, buoyed by the publication of the European bank stress tests, good earnings reports from a number of banks and positive news on the regulatory front. In this context, the fund’s performance continued to rebound in July, particularly driven by cyclical stocks and emerging markets that are benefiting from a better economical context and showing good results. A major event happened in July regarding the water space. The United Nations voted for the first time in favour of recognising a human right to water by 122 votes in favour and zero votes against. The General Assembly declared safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as essential rights, while highlighting that almost 900 million people in the world still do not have access to clean water and that more than 2.6 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation. Studies also indicate about 1.5 million children under the age of five die each year and 443 million school days are lost because of water- and sanitation-related diseases. Catarina de Albuquerque, the expert in charge of the issue will report annually to the General Assembly, focusing on the principal challenges to achieving the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation, as well as on progress towards the relevant Millennium Development Goals. It aims at halving the proportion of people who cannot reach or afford safe drinking water and halving the number who do not have basic sanitation, all by 2015.
