Management comment

The macroeconomic environment improved in July as fears of a double dip recession abated and a strong start to the quarterly reporting season revived investor confidence. Despite a bout of weakness around the middle of the month triggered by disappointing US economic data and signs of a slowdown in China, markets ended the month significantly higher. Financial stocks soared in Europe, buoyed by the publication of the European bank stress tests, good earnings reports from a number of banks and positive news on the regulatory front. In this context, the fund’s performance continued to rebound in July, particularly driven by cyclical stocks that are benefiting from a better economical context and showing good results. The performance of some lagging sectors such as solar continued to recover this month, particularly those exposed to the demand of emerging countries that remains robust. One of the best contributors of this month performance is Roth & Rau, a German company active in the photovoltaic technology. The company works on a specific technology for the deposition of a thin silicon layer on the solar panels and the production of thin film solar modules. From a governance point of view, the company’s score is above the universe average. Roth & Rau adopted a dual system of corporate governance where the supervisory board is fully composed of independent members. Moreover the Chairman of the supervisory board is dissociated from the CEO, to guarantee a bigger independence of the supervisory board from the management. From a social point of view, the company recognizes that one of the main risks for the company is the inadequate availability of qualified personnel and the loss of expertise, for a company where the technology development is at the hearth of the economic sustainability. To manage this risk, the company offers extensive training and aims to attract and retain highly qualified employees. The company is also active in helping local communities: as example in Africa the company provides financial support for electrification projects. The objective is to alleviate energy-related poverty in rural areas. Solar facilities provided by the company are used to provide lighting in schools.

Management guidance

The management team invests in the stock of international companies that contribute to protecting the planet through the use of “clean” technologies that aim to reduce the emission of contaminants, improve the efficiency of production and use of energy, as well as the effectiveness in the treatment of waste. In addition to the usual financial criteria, the stock selection process includes non-financial criteria related to sustainable development, namely so-called ESG criteria (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance).
