Management comment

Global bond positions made an overall positive contribution to performance over the month : Tactical management of a slight modified duration over-exposure: slightly positive contribution due to the appreciation of global government bond markets; Country allocation (slight overweight US & UK vs. EMU & Japan): positive contribution given the increase in Eurozone yields relative to US Treasuries & UK Gilts; Yield curve allocation (US, UK and EMU flattening): negative contribution in the wake of the US steepening (& to a lesser extent the UK Gilt curve); Bond selection: positive contribution thanks to the spread tightening of Greek, Spanish, Italian and Irish debt. Our credit positions generated a positive contribution. Our emerging bond & currency market overlay fund, Amundi Global Emergents (in which some global bond funds and the majority of VaR funds are invested) posted a positive performance in both absolute (+1.26%) and relative (+0.23%) terms in July. Our inter-bloc strategies posted gains as the EUR gained ground against the CAD (+3.25%) and the Yen (+3.95%). Our intra-bloc arbitrages outperformed this month.The varied emerging debt currency bets provided a negative contribution over the month. Equity market exposure was positive while trading was negative.

Management guidance

The investment objective is to generate an absolute return (EONIA + 2% p.a.) over two years through the dynamic allocation of the ex-ante VaR (max. 4% p.a.) on OECD and non-OECD bond and currency markets, as well as on OECD equities and commodity futures markets. The investment team diversifies this allocation among top-down strategic positions (both directional and relative value), bottom-up tactical bets, and trading.
