Management comment

MSCI AC Pacific free recouped all the YTD loss in July as the index was up 6%, driven by stronger market sentiment on the back of positive corporate results. Risk appetite has also improved on hopes that monetary condition may continue to stay loose in the US, where the Fed has indicated possibility of renewed quantitative easing, and China, where more evidence of slowing economic growth prompts a pause in PBOC’s recent tightening measures. While equity markets have staged a pleasant recovery, the volatility in the currency markets remains a concern. The recent sharp appreciation of the EUR and the JPY reflects lower appetite for risk as a result of the excessive loose monetary condition in an effort to promote money supply amid sluggish credit growth in the US. There are clear signs of a much slower economic growth in the developed world in 2011. We remain convinced that interest rates will stay low in the G3 in the foreseeable future. The fund has made no adjustment in country allocation last month. The portfolio is underweight in the externally-oriented economies (Taiwan and Korea) and overweight markets that are geared towards domestic demand growth and weaker reliance onexternal growth outlook (India and Indonesia). On a sector basis, the fund is heavily positioned in banks and properties that are direct beneficiaries from the ongoing asset price appreciation, a theme which we believe will continue to do well in 2010.
